A Whistle-Stop Tour of Edinburgh: How to Spend 24 Hours in the Scottish Capital (Extreme Day Trip Edition)

Visiting Edinburgh on an extreme day trip? Fear not. Follow this quick and easy, local’s guide to spending 24 hours in the Scottish capital.

If you’re visiting Edinburgh for just 24 hours, a single night, or even on an Extreme Day Trip, you’ll want to make the most of your time with a whirlwind tour of the city’s iconic attractions. This guide focuses on the Old Town, parts of George Street, and Stockbridge – all conveniently located near Edinburgh Waverley train station.

Breakfast / Morning

Start your day in Edinburgh with a coffee and pastry to go. You’ll most likely want to hit the ground running with sight seeing, so don’t be afraid to grab something easy. If you’re coming by train then I would recommend picking up something quick from the station or Waverley Mall. If you’re coming via Edinburgh airport, then there’s plenty of choices before you leave!

Use your morning to wander around Old Town, with highlights covering the Royal Mile, Victoria Street, and Edinburgh Castle. For Harry Potter fans, Edinburgh holds special significance:

  • The Elephant House: Located on George IV Bridge, this cosy cafe is often referred to as the “birthplace” of Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling wrote parts of her first novels here.
  • Greyfriars Kirkyard: This historic graveyard is rumoured to have inspired character names. Look for William McGonagall, Elizabeth Moodie, and Thomas Riddell—the original you-know-who.

Take your time and just get lost in the independent shops and pictureque spots. Edinburgh can be a fairly safe city, so you don’t need to be overly stressed about pickpocketing – but this area is one of the busiest in the city, so just be mindful.

If you want a trendy, cool coffee head to the Milkman on Cockburn street. I got their Matcha a few months ago and it was pretty good!

You’ll most likely end up walking through alleys, and it may feel like you’re walking around in circles, but that’s all part of the fun. Stroll up the Royal Mile towards Edinburgh Castle for some breathtaking photo opportunities. By late morning, make your way down to Princes Street to capture sunshine-lit views of the castle from afar. If the weather is treating you, then cut through Princes Street Gardens!

If you’re wanting to get in a bit of curated culture, there’s some amazing galleries and museums in this area. Check out:

City Art Centre
2 Market Street, Edinburgh EH1 1DE

The City of Edinburgh’s Art collection is one of the finest in Scotland, and includes works by the most important Scottish artists. And even better? It’s free! There’s a gorgeous cafe inside called Mimi’s Bakehouse – 100% recommend if you’re looking for a slice of cake.

Lunch

Lunch is the perfect time to enjoy a meal with a view. Here are two excellent options:

  • West End Brasserie: Its glass-fronted foyer offers fantastic people-watching opportunities.
  • The Willow Tea Rooms: This charming spot boasts direct views of Edinburgh Castle, making it a lovely setting for Instagram-worthy content.

After lunch, it’s time to venture further afield. Walk towards Stockbridge, a picturesque neighborhood known for its boutique shops and cozy vibe.

Afternoon Snack

On the way, head to Wellington Coffee on George Street for an artisanal experience, with gorgeous to go bites.

While exploring Stockbridge, pop into some of the area’s charity shops for unique finds. Feeling peckish? Grab a pastry or snack from one of the many local bakeries. The laid-back atmosphere of Stockbridge makes it a wonderful place to unwind and recharge.

Evening / Dinner

As the day winds down, focus on good food and great vibes for the evening.

For a trendy dining experience, check out Sotto. It’s fairly new and has been getting some incredible reviews. It’s a relaxed dining and wine bar but that has over 200 selections.

Cap off your day with cocktails at Panda & Sons, an award-winning, speakeasy-style bar known for its creative drinks. Be sure to book ahead as it’s a popular spot.

Even on an Extreme Day Trip, Edinburgh’s charm and history will leave you with unforgettable memories. Whether you’re a Potterhead, a foodie, or simply someone looking for a slice of Scottish culture, this itinerary packs in the best the city has to offer!
