While going through my photos from my Dubai and Middle East cruise onboard Costa Smeralda, I found myself drooling over all the incredible cocktails I enjoyed. I realised, I never actually shared a list of my favourites! I dug through my notes app to find the ones I’d jotted down, and even went back through the menus to jog my memory.
And with that whole Costa drink package controversy still lingering in the back of my mind, let’s just say I was determined to make sure I got my money’s worth. Challenge accepted.
Costa Cruises Drink Package
If you’re new to Costa Cruises, their My Drinks Package is a flat-fee option that covers unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from the standard bar menu – including cocktails, wines, beers, spirits, liqueurs, coffees, and soft drinks.
One thing that catches a lot of people out is Costa’s approach to drinks if you don’t have a package. Unlike many cruise lines, even water at mealtimes isn’t complimentary – you have to pay for it. That’s right: no free glass of tap water in the main dining room. The only exception is at the buffet, where you can find self-service dispensers for water and juice during meal hours.
So, while the drinks package might seem pricey upfront, it suddenly makes more sense when you factor in that you’d otherwise be paying individually for every single drink, including the basics.
For me, the package made total sense. And on my February sailing, I made it my mission to try a mix of classics and new-to-me creations, and I can confidently say I ticked off some very tasty boxes.
Traditional Piña Colada or Kiwi Colada
Rum, coconut mix, pineapple juice, kiwi syrup.
I was obsessed with both the traditional version, and the special kiwi one – think piña colada with a tropical twist. The kiwi gave it a refreshing zing that made it perfect for those sunny days at sea.
Espresso Martini (The Secret One)
Okay, so here’s the thing, this isn’t on the menu. And if you ask politely… You’ll probably still get told “no.” But if you happen to catch the right bartender in a good mood, you might just be in luck. I did, and it was one of the best espresso martinis I’ve ever had. Smooth, rich, with just the right caffeine kick.
And because they were so few and far between, I made it my side-mission to try some other Kahlúa-coffee hybrids.
White Russian
Vodka, Kahlúa, cream. Simple and easy. Basically, dessert in a glass – rich and indulgent, perfect after a big meal. Think espresso martini but a little creamier, and without that caffeine kick.
Mojito
Fresh mint, lime, rum, soda water. A classic, but Costa’s version was extra minty and wonderfully refreshing.
Aperol Spritz
Aperol, Prosecco, soda water. Of course I had to get one of these when they had a dedicated bar! I thought the bar would be an extra cost, but it was included!
Spritz Hugo
Prosecco, elderflower syrup, soda water. A lighter, floral alternative to Aperol. I loved this for an afternoon pick-me-up.
Classic Gin and Tonic
Sometimes you just need something crisp and simple. Costa’s gin selection was decent, and it hit the spot every time. Plus, if you just want a little quick one – you can’t beat it.
White Wine
While not the most adventurous option, their chilled white wine was a great pairing for dinner in the main dining room. I would love to tell you which ‘white wine’ was my favourite. But in all honesty, I just asked for white wine on the first night, and then every following night the waiters brought one over. Not sure if they switch it up every night as there was no names. But every single option was superb. White wine is probably my favourite drink of all time – preferably a sauvignon blanc from the southern hemisphere. But of course Italian wine is going to be good!
If you’re heading on Costa Smeralda, head to the bar at the very back of the ship called Bar Superba. It’s absolutely gorgeous and I found it was always completely empty. And… It’s kinda adults only too! You’ve got to be over 14 to sit in this area.
Win, win!
