It’s no surprise that content creation is a booming industry. Every day, more people dream of quitting their 9–5 jobs to become an ‘influencer,’ ‘content creator,’ or ‘UGC creator’ – whatever the current buzzword might be. But if you’re still in the wishing-and-hoping stage, you’re probably wondering: where do I even start? Well, this blog is here to guide you through it all, and you’ll be a travel content creator before you know it.

Finding your ‘Why?’

Finding your ‘why’ will really help you lead this new journey with authenticity. If you’re simply doing it because you want to have free holidays, then you’re probably going to be unhappy until that point. And, truthfully… You may never get a free trip.

But maybe you’re like me: you’re obsessed with travel, your partner’s tired of hearing about it, and you just need an outlet. Whatever it is, figuring this out earlier will keep you grounded even if the growth doesn’t come quickly.

Don’t niche too early

As you’re building this skillset and establishing your audience, don’t be afraid to try different things. This could be different styles of travel content creation, different tone of voices, and even different aesthetics. You’ll be able to see which resonates better with your audience

Follow the trends, don’t set them

Honestly, you don’t need to be original to be successful. Trending captions, sounds, and content styles go viral on social media for a reason.

At the core, it comes down to how social media algorithms work. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube actively prioritise trending content because it keeps users on the app longer. When a particular sound or format gains traction, the algorithm knows people are engaging with it, so it continues to push similar content to more users. By tapping into these trends, your travel content becomes part of what the platform is already looking to promote.

Plus, as a travel content creator it means you don’t need to start from a blank page. You have a proven basis that is working. That makes it easier to create quickly and consistently. It’s essentially plug-and-play creativity: you get to add your own spin while riding the wave of something that’s already hot.

Repurpose your travel content

When you’re first starting out, you may not have the budget to go on 3, 4, 5 holidays a year, but that one holiday can produce hundreds of posts, reels, TikToks, and blog posts that would have you set for a good 8 months! You don’t have to go into debt to become a travel content creator.

For example, here’s a quick example of how you could create 50 unique pieces of content from a weeks holiday in Kavos:

Instagram Posts / Reels / TikToks (Short-Form Video Ideas)

  1. Kavos Arrival Vlog – Day 1 airport to hotel journey

  8. Minimalist shot of your SPF + sunnies on a white towel
  9. Market or souvenir stall photo (with colorful items)
  10. Candid photo of you journaling or planning content

See what I mean? I’m not saying you have to do them all to be successful, but one holiday doesn’t need to mean one piece of content. And you can still make travel content when you’re back home in the UK.

Side note: don’t be taken back by the big influencers who post 1 Youtube video of a destination. They didn’t always have the budget or freedom to do a vacation a week.

This also ties directly into my next platform…

Utilise every platform

You want to make sure you are considering every platform possible! Cross-share and be actively engaging in them all. You never know where your audience lives! I would recommend starting by claiming your username on all social platforms – even if you don’t plan on using them yet.

For example, here is a list of all the social platforms I use:

My only exception is Twitter/X, I am totally against that one…

But if you’re spending hours on editing a video for TikTok, you may as well repurpose it for Youtube Shorts, Facebook, and Instagram! I’ve had some videos really take off on Facebook, but do absolutely crickets on Youtube Shorts, and vice-versa.

Invest in yourself before you invest in equipment

You don’t need a fancy DSLR, a drone, or professional-grade lighting to get started as a travel content creator. In fact, some of the most successful creators began with just a smartphone. The truth is, no amount of high-end gear will compensate for a lack of a POV, storytelling, or personality.

Start with what you already have. Focus on improving your skills – learn how to frame a good shot, edit engaging videos, write compelling captions, and understand what resonates with your audience. These are the foundations that make content powerful, not the tools used to film it.

Once you’ve developed your voice, found your style, and know your audience, you’ll be in a better place to invest wisely. Upgrade your gear when you can financially justify it – when you’ve built momentum, you’ve monetised your travel content, or when your current setup is genuinely limiting your growth.

Remember, equipment enhances your work, but it doesn’t define it. You are the value. Your perspective, your creativity, and your storytelling are what people connect with. So invest in learning, experimenting, and showing up first. The rest will follow.

What apps you need to become a travel content creator:

There’s so many apps out there that can support your travel content creation career, but honestly… You pThere are so many apps out there promising to level up your travel content game—but truthfully? You don’t need them all, especially when you’re just starting out. Instead of overwhelming yourself, focus on a few essentials that can actually support your growth without draining your time or budget. Here are the ones I’d consider absolute must-haves for beginners:

CapCut – Think of this as your all-in-one video editing toolkit. From trending TikTok templates to custom reels and short-form content, CapCut covers it all, and the best part? The free version is more than enough. It’s a great way to learn the basics of editing, adding music, captions, transitions, and more without needing a full desktop setup.

Canva – Canva’s free plan is perfect for creating high-quality thumbnails, Pinterest pins, Instagram graphics, and more. It’s super user-friendly and packed with templates that make your content look polished even if you’re not a designer.

Your phone’s Notes app – Seriously underrated. Use it to jot down caption ideas, save your most-used hashtags, brainstorm content plans, or even draft blog post outlines. Having a quick-access space for your ideas can make your content creation workflow so much easier, especially when creativity strikes randomly.

Start simple. These three tools are more than enough to help you stay consistent, organised, and creative as you begin building your travel content creation journey.

If you’re going to invest in something, I would suggest a Dropbox storage subscription or iCloud storage. Your phones storage is going to full up fast with all your video content, edited content, chopped content, repurposed content, etc… Keep everything organised on the cloud will save you so much stress later.

I hope these tips and recommendations give you enough confidence to just give it a go! Don’t worry about failing at first, cringing at yourself, or wanting to delete everything and starting fresh. Just go for it!
