Should you book Independence of the Seas in 2025?

Independence of the Seas was the first ship I ever sailed on! All the way back in 2019. But 6 years later, should you still consider her for your 2025 holiday?

When it comes to choosing your next cruise, Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas is likely to pop up – especially if you’re sailing from the UK. But is this fan favourite still worth booking in 2025? I cruised on Indy years ago, and she holds a nostalgic place in my heart. So I’ve taken a fresh look at what she’s offering now, what’s changed, and whether she’s still got that magic spark.

TL:DR – Yes you should book Independence of the Seas. I loved her that much, I just featured her in my “5 of the best Royal Caribbean ships” blog post.

🚢 What’s the Hype About Independence of the Seas?

If you’ve cruised before, especially from Southampton, Indy probably needs no introduction. She was a game-changer when she launched in 2008—big, bold, and packed with features. After her 2018 Royal Amplification, she got a bit of a glow-up, including:

  • The Sky Pad (bungee trampoline/VR experience)
  • Laser tag in Studio B
  • The Perfect Storm waterslides
  • Splashaway Bay for kids
  • New dining venues like Playmakers Sports Bar and Fish & Ships

🛌 How Does She Compare to the Newer Ships?

Let’s be honest, she’s no Wonder of the Seas, but she’s also not trying to be. You won’t find robot bartenders or an 8-neighbourhood layout. But Indy holds her own:

✅ Spacious decks and classic Royal Caribbean layout
✅ More intimate feel compared to the mega ships
✅ Great value for money
✅ Still packed with features for families and adults alike

That said, if you’re craving cutting-edge thrills, Broadway shows, or the newest dining concepts, you might find her a little dated in comparison.

👀 Who should book?

I truly believe if you’re a family of 4, and you’re considering a first cruise then Independence of the Seas is perfect for that! I had my very first cruise onboard her, and she’s what started this whole journey.

That’s truly where the price point sits too.. If you’re a couple or a solo traveller, you’re gonna get the short end of the stick with Royal Caribbean prices. But if you’re travelling as a family of 4, that’s where you’ll see the biggest value!

❌ Who shouldn’t book?

To be honest, if you’re a seasoned cruiser then you might not be that impressed with her itineraries or the ship. There’s plenty more ‘exciting’ ones out there that you’d be interested in.
