Is Royal Caribbean Still an Exciting Escape for Older Travellers?

For context, I am 30 years old, child-less, and I never cruise with larger parties. It’s usually myself and my partner. Now that we’re getting older (i know 30 isn’t actually old), we’re starting to wonder if Royal Caribbean is still right for us…

When it comes to cruising, Royal Caribbean has long been a favourite for travellers of all ages. However, as the cruise line expands its offerings for families, some older cruisers, myself included, may wonder, “Is Royal Caribbean still the right choice for me?”

And the answer? Well, it depends.

Who is Royal Caribbean’s Target Audience?

Royal Caribbean ships are often designed with families in mind. With larger vessels like the Oasis and Quantum class ships, these floating resorts cater to multigenerational travel – everything from grandparents to toddlers.

But what if you’re child-free looking for a relaxing cruising vacation?

Well, don’t be too put off. These massive ships allow for diverse spaces, you can find adults-only sanctuaries, such as the Solarium, a quiet retreat for guests aged 16 and over.

So, while the ships are family-friendly, they also include offer adult-only areas where you can relax and enjoy a more peaceful experience.

The “Family of 4” / “Kids Sail Free” Pricing Trap

If you’ve ever searched for cruise deals online, you may have noticed that pricing is often marketed for a “family of 4” or “kids sail free”, leaving solo travellers or couples wondering where they fit in. This pricing strategy can sometimes give the impression that Royal Caribbean is mainly for families. And whilst I would say they’re main focus are families and children, you can still enjoy a Royal Caribbean cruise child-free.

My advice? Book during term time for less kids. I did a 7 Night cruise around the Med in September 2024, and there was far less kids than what would have been 2 weeks prior in August.

Additionally, speak to a travel agent! They’ll have access to a wider selection of pricing and dates that cater to smaller groups or couples, and there are often great rates for solo cabins as well. It’s always a good idea to consult with an agent who understands how to find the best value for your specific needs, regardless of whether you’re a party of two or six.

Is Celebrity Cruises Better for Young Child-Free Couples Than Royal Caribbean?

For young child-free couples seeking a more serene and sophisticated cruise experience, Celebrity Cruises may indeed be the better option compared to Royal Caribbean. With a focus on luxury and relaxation, Celebrity offers a more intimate atmosphere with upscale dining, elegant lounges, and curated onboard experiences that encourage romance and connection. The quieter ambiance and design of Celebrity’s ships often appeal to couples looking for a getaway from the hustle and bustle.

In contrast, while Royal Caribbean provides plenty of exciting activities and entertainment, it can be more family-centric, which may not resonate as well with couples seeking a peaceful escape.

Ultimately, if your ideal vacation involves fine dining, relaxation by the pool, and enriching cultural experiences, Celebrity Cruises is likely to be a more fitting choice for young child-free couples.

What If i still want the thrill Royal Caribbean offers?

Beyond the family-focus, Royal Caribbean have some of the wildest and craziest things on a cruise ship… From deck-spanning slides, virtual reality, surfing, and rock climbing… But the good news is, you can find a lot of similar features on other cruise lines!

For example, the Norwegian Viva has go-karting and dry slides and MSC World America has a similar slide to the Abyss on Oasis of the Seas. So don’t worry, Royal Caribbean is not the only cruise line with slides and adventure packed activities.
